Jarian raises bar to make 2018 Games

Teen hopes to compete at Youth Olympics

Weightlifter Jarian Hogan.

RISING weightlifting star Jarian Hogan, of Menangle, is aiming to compete in the Youth Olympics in Argentina next year.

Hogan holds the NSW records for the snatch (63kg), clean and jerk (81kg) and Olympic total (144kg) sections in the under-15s age group.

The Local Sports Star nominee set the records at the Australian International Championships in Melbourne in March.

She now has her sights set on attaining her next goal, a silver medal at the Commonwealth and Oceania Championships at the Gold Coast and earning selection for the Youth Olympics next year.

Hogan first began weightlifting at the suggestion of her crossfit coach when she was 12.

“I love lifting and there is no better feeling than landing a number in a lift I have never hit before,” she said.

“I am ranked third for the Commonwealth and Oceania Championship.

“My goal is to also break my own Australian records in snatch, clean and jerk and Olympic total.”

Training for weightlifting requires a huge amount of dedication. Hogan trains 20 hours a week before and after school at St Patrick’s College in Campbelltown.

She also has a strict eating plan to ensure she makes the weight requirements for each competition.

“My discipline can be difficult at times to maintain and uphold but it’s made significantly easier with the support and love of my parents,” she said.

“Training also involves a lot of strength and mobility work and regular consultations with a physio to ensure my body is moving and functioning.”

Nominations for Local Sports Star close August 31.
